Should you Adapt, Innovate or Reinvent?

It’s Sept 1, is your strategy supporting further growth or slowing shrinkage?

Growth is neither sudden or guaranteed. It’s not when that matters, it’s what.

Recognizing what does or doesn’t work, and is more or less valued is a relative assessment not absolute. So why isn’t it commonplace?

Faster isn’t always better, or even cheaper. Relying on tactical or operational advantages may generate revenue, but the value, the basis on which your firm is meaningful to the market requires something else.

This morning the fast Fashion behemoth SHEIN, went public on the HongKong Stock Exchange. In 2023, it optimistically filed for an IPO in the US, only to shift to London eying  a valuation of  $100Bn. Regulatory scrutiny forced them to seek the Hong Kong listing. Today, it’s target was $26–27Bn. In spite of volatile trading, shares closed near the original IPO price.

As Sui-Lee Wee reported in New York Times “The drop in valuation reflects questions many investors have about the sustainability of SHEIN’s business — and whether it can find new ways to grow after the United States and Europe, two of the company’s biggest markets, ended tariff exemptions on cheap goods that had helped propel its low-cost model.”

The find new ways to Grow is the imperative of every business. SHEIN shows how the algorithm alone wasn’t going to save them. An Adaptive strategy depeIt’s nds on stable customer needs and industry profit pool. It also presumes that the organization’s existing capabilities are still relevant, just deployed differently, or the operating context is merely altered not destroyed.

Sorry SHEIN and all of the fashion retailers that its model quashed. Your future livelihood requires more, and I’d choose reinvention over innovation. Your new investors should expect more too.  Reinvention forces real trade-offs, challenges Brand identity and the logic of the firm’s value creation. More than a process adjustment, or structure shift it helps redefine the basis of competition by preserve the future needs.

Simple take? If you want to preserve market fit, Adapt. If you want to create more options for growth, innovate. But if you want to change the basis on which you matter, reinvent.
